In addition to the alto horn, Nathan began playing the French horn as a senior in High School and later received his masters in horn performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati after completing a B.A. in music from Asbury University. His primary horn teachers include Randy Gardner, Tom Sherwood, Duane Dugger, Bill Hammond, and Dave Shelton. He was mentored and tutored in conducting and leadership by Ron Holz and James Curnow.

Nathan is currently completing his Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Kentucky, where his research interests include the intersection of music and identity, the American brass band movement, 19th-century hymnody, and the music of The Salvation Army.

He enjoys his life in the relative quiet of Wilmore, Ky, where he lives with his wife, Ellen, and their two young daughters, Eliza and Audie.

Nathan plays exclusively on the Willson Eb alt horn mod. 2420TA.
